Bookmarks plus
by Jacob on Nov.26, 2004, under Technical
I had some ideas about how bookmarks should work in browsers. As I type this, they will become a permanent record in slashdot.
First, and this is starting to be done better, but not always fully, but browsers should use the favicon.ico next to the bookmark text.
But even better than that, would be if the browser took a self screen shot of the page when you bookmarked it, and then when you are browing through your bookmarks and put your mouse cursor over the bookmark, it displays the thumbnail sized screenshot of the web page.
Web browsers should keep track of which bookmarks you click on the most and display the top 5 or whatever in a “recent” or “most clicked” category in the bookmarks.
This next idea I think is being implimented. But you should have bookmark folders which in fact are an RSS (speed) feed, where all the links in the folder are actually items in the feed.
Another idea is to be able to bookmark a history. So when I go to a bookmark, I can also (optionally) get the back and forward history that I had when I bookmarked the page.
Happy Thanksgiving
by Jacob on Nov.26, 2004, under Religion
I wanted to wish everyone a happy thanksgiving. Even though no one really reads this blog. Anyway, I thought I would list just a few things that I am thankful for.
I am thankful for my religion. The fact that we have religion to guide us and help us to be better people.
I am thankful for my computer talents. That I can be good at at least something. That I can talk about web technologies and really know what I’m talking about.
I am thankful for my last missionary companion, Elder Draper, because without him, I would have had a miserable ending to my mission.
Search Engines
by Jacob on Nov.20, 2004, under Technical
I’ve been researching different search engines that can be used to index a limited set of websites. I’ve come up with these four as possible candidates:
ht://Dig does the job, but it has problems updating an index, and perhaps with database corruption. It will search pdf, word, and other documents if given proper parsers.
The Search Engine Project is a search engine that runs from php and indexes into MySQL (v4+).
SiteSearch uses Lucene (java based, from Apache Jakarta) as the indexer, has a php front end, and provides search and click statistics.
Spindle also uses Lucene. I don’t know much more than that.
Ham radio joke

I found this joke here:
Q: How do you greet a ham radio operator?
A. With a short wave.
Hillary Clinton, Yuck!
by Jacob on Nov.04, 2004, under Politics
Well, the day after the 2004 presidential election and Larry King is already trying to make a big deal about Hillary Clinton running for president in 2008. If that isn’t scary, I don’t know what is.
But let me list some reasons why I don’t think she will be elected. If I’m lucky, this blog will endure until 2008
The big one is that most people said in the exit polls yesterday that morals were a big issue. And I think the Hillary Clinton is going to have a really tough time making a case why she promotes moral values better than the next candidate. Another reason, is that she is going to have a hard time convincing a lot of Americans that she has enough qualifications to be elected President. She has only been elected to the Senate in New York just a couple of years now, and I don’t think that she is going to win based on the issues.
Her only chance is to make the non-issues issues. Like that fact that she would be the first woman President, and foo like that. If she can make that center stage, then she will have an easier time convincing voters.
