Strongbad does technology

I just wanted to say that the latest Strongbad email is pretty good. I laughed.

Some of it reminded me of days from 1995, except where he describes email addresses, which pretty much is increasingly valid.

Characters by Hour

After examining how many posts I make on average during each hour of the day, I thought it might be more accurate to look at characters posted by hours of the day.  This is more accurate to the time I spend blogging.

Posts by hour

Here is a graph that shows when I do most of my blogging.  I’m still working on the format, but the x-axis shows the hour of the day, starting with midnight, and the y-axis showing the number of posts during that hour, currently peaking at about 40.

Top 20 posts

I thought I would make a list of some of the most visited blog entries.

And here are two that were my favorites, even if they weren’t appreciated by anyone else:

White all-sports t-shirts

Dear BYU Athletic Department,

For years you have been encouraging fans to wear blue to BYU athletic events. I’ve head commentary about how people don’t wear blue to BYU games, that every other color in the rainbow is also represented.

One of my cats

Cat Over the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my blog. People have stopped visting it. So I thought I would add a picture of my cat to see if that would help at all. So this is my cat Gilligan. I think the name comes from the old TV series, Gilligan’s Island.

This cat is home in Oregon, so I only get to see it about once a year.

Is Google protecting privacy?

“In court papers filed on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in San Jose, the Justice Department stated that Google had refused to comply with a subpoena issued last year for one million random Web addresses from Google’s databases as well as records of all searches entered on Google during any one-week period.” (source)

Went running again today

Today’s run was a lot harder than I thought it should have been.  I’m not sure if it is because I’ve gotten fatter and had to carry more weight, or that I didn’t have enough energy, or that the air was thinner.  I guess the best thing to do is to run again on monday.

BYU over Wyoming

I attended tonight’s basketball game where BYU overcame Wyoming 80-67. It was an exciting game, but with its own frustrations.

BYU Bookstore DVD Rentals

Dear BYU Bookstore,

Thank you for providing a great service to BYU students by offering video rentals of great movies. I would like to ask, however, that you lower your price on DVD rentals. I think the price should be lowered from $1.29 to $0.99 or less. This would be more in line with other DVD rental trends. There are automated DVD rental machines popping up all over the place, at McDonald’s restaurants and near supermarkets such as Macey’s. These machines offer rentals for only $1, and offer some of the most popular new releases.

You currently offer VHS rentals for $0.49. This is a great price. However, in these days when DVD players are more common than VHS players, and DVD prices for movies are very similar to the VHS price, the rental prices for DVD should be closer to the rental prices for VHS movies.

The Brothers Grimm

I recently viewed the film, The Brothers Grimm, and I was pretty disappointed. I felt that this movie had so much potential, but completely failed at being a great and entertaining film. The basic story was good. Many of the actors were good, except for maybe that one guy who was maybe suppose to be italian, and the special effects were ok. But there was so much of the movie that just plain didn’t make sense. The continuity of the movie was aweful, and I felt like there was too much that wasn’t introduced, such as some of the characters.

Although the movie was pretty bad, I did have a chance to see some of it a second time, and it was better the second time. However, it is too bad that you have to watch it once first in order to be able to see it the second time.

Even the second time through the movie, the friend that I was watching it with continuously asked me questions about who was who and what was going on, and I really couldn’t answer her at all.

I don’t recommend this movie, unless you really want something that doesn’t make complete sense. If you do see it, you might consider doing some research about the actual Jacob Grimm first.

Questions of life

It seems like every day I come up with a few more questions of life.  One of my more recent questions is: Are my poor sleeping habits a symptom or cause of other life problems?  A question like this can’t be answered simply by flipping a coin.  In deed it may require a lot of thought, self-reflection, and even experimentation.

The problem is that these questions come faster than they can be answered.  I’m falling further and further behind in answering the questions of life.

Web Site Congruences

I found this web site which talks about university website congruences in 2002.  I thought it was kind of interesting.

Seeking a lady potato

Mr. Potato Head has been sitting way too close to my keyboard.  I found that he had written this and posted it to singlespuds.com:

Single russet potato seeks tender sweet potato.  Future Mrs. Potato Head should NOT be good in the kitchen — should not smoke — and should not play with hot oil.  Looking for a lady spud with a full set of parts — angry eyes excluded.  Call me at 801-422-3912.

Microsoft Recruiting at BYU

Ok, so some guy named Luis from Microsoft is here at BYU giving a technical presentation about how to develop a mobile devices.

I’m typing this as he is giving his presentation. So far, he seems like a friendly guy, and he knows what he is doing, but he doesn’t impress me as being an industry leader. He is going over a bunch of visual studio stuff, and since I really don’t care about visual studio, I’m not very impressed.  He is talking about all of his specific features in visual studio, and all of them are either Microsoft platform specific, or things I’ve seen elsewhere in IDEs like Eclipse.

I started getting excited because he was going to show us about web services, but all it turned out to be was he did some visual studio thing and inserted some code he already wrote.

Why didn’t I sit closer to the door?  I could have grabbed my pizza and been home by now.

So the base idea was that it is super easy to write mobile applications with visual studio.  He said that if anyone could do anything similar on another platform in less than two days, that we should email him.  I might take that challenge.
