Jerusalem Center now houses refugees

In case you are wondering what the status of the BYU Jerusalem Center is during the latest middle-east conflict, I suggest you read this post. Personally, I think the chances of the Jerusalem opening this fall as was planned is pretty slim.

EFY Season

You know it is EFY season at BYU when you start reading about EFY incidents in the Police Beat column of the Daily Universe. For example, the recent Police Beat included these two incidents:

July 18: A student reported to police that she was receiving excessive and annoying calls and text messages to her cell phone by four unknown individuals. Police contacted the individuals, whom happened to be EFY students, and questioned them. Upon investigation it appears the individuals got the students number by accident and had been trying to contact another EFY participant.

So in other words, all four individuals were trying to call and annoy another EFY participant, but they got the wrong number by mistake.

July 18: Officers were called to the central building of Heritage Halls to attend a meeting with EFY participants about the dangers of shooting people with air soft guns.

I “wonder” why on earth the EFY participants were having a meeting about the dangers of shooting people. Perhaps they were completely unarmed and theologically interested?

Kings Mountain

Today I hiked Kings Mountain, which is about halfway between Tillamook and Hillsboro, Oregon. The hike was pretty difficult. The total elevation gain was 2500 feet, and I hiked 5 miles (2.5 each way). It took me 2 hours to get up, and about an hour and a half to get back down. In some parts, getting along the trail was really steep and it was kind of a scramble getting up. Today was hot, which meant that the liter and a half of water I took wasn’t quite enough.

Overall, it was a great hike, but nothing for beginners. My shoe wear wasn’t good enough; I wish I had a good pair of boots. I’ll post pictures when I get them developed.

Good use of positive encouragement

I’m pretty critical sometimes on my blog here about the various things that people do wrong. Tonight I want to mention something I think is a good idea.

Many apartment places threaten their residents during cleaning inspections. University Villa the last few months has found a positive way of encouraging residents to pass their monthly cleaning checks during the first inspection. Every month they do a drawing of people who passed their checks the first time, and 5 people win free pizzas. This is a great simple way of encouraging people to keep their apartments orderly. It is far better business to encourage people this way than by threatening them with punishments for failing to complete their cleaning assignments.

By the way, there are still negative consequences for not passing cleaning checks, but they aren’t the focus of the encouragement.

The greater strength

Sometimes we discover someones fault or weakness. Sometimes thoughts come into the head of the natural man about how we can put someone down.

There are those that think that they can get gain and strength by hurting others. They think that having the ability to push others down makes them strong.

But I reject their delusions of strength. The greater strength is exhibited by those who may see ways to get gain, but exercise self-constraint in order to lift others up. The greater strength does not come by pushing others down in their faults, but lifting them up through their weaknesses.

My fight against porn

Pornography is evil. I am disgusted with anyone who would seek out pornographic material. That is why I get a bit upset when I find in my server statistics that someone arrived at this blog by typing the phrase, “I AM TRYING TO FIND A PORN MOVIE,” into MSN search.

Don’t search for porn, and don’t expect to find any around here. I looked up some information about the person who performed that search, and I will publish it here to show that the Internet is not anonymous.

On July 6, at 19:09:41 MST, a user from IP address 206.192.18.14 arrived at my website while “trying to find a porn movie.” This user was using the computer host18-14.ecpi.edu at ECPI College Of Technology. This user was using Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows XP.

For the record, the user accessed my January 2006 blog archive which contained a post where I questioned the dependency of Google’s business on porn.

I suspect that by publishing this post, I’ll see an increase of people coming to this site looking for inappropriate material. If you are one of these people, you won’t find any inappropriate material here. I encourage you to stop searching for porn. If you can’t stop, you may be addicted and I exhort you to seek professional help.

Without words

Without words, I could perfectly describe exactly how I feel. With words, not so much.

Early morning Y hike

This morning I hiked the Y again. For some reason this morning I just naturally woke up early. With all the found time, I decided to hike the Y, and do it before it got to hot outside. I left at about 8:45am. At that time the sun had hit the valley, but not quite the west side of the mountain. Even though I left pretty early, it was still pretty warm outside.

My focus today was to get to the top as quickly as possible. I brought my stopwatch, so I could time myself and use the time as motivation to get to the top. I decided that I could stop every 10 minutes for a drink of water. The end result is that I got from the trail-head to the the bottom of the Y in 29 minutes, which I think is a new best time for me. Even though the hike was hard at that pace, I felt like I was more energized than on previous hikes.

Ears of corn

Sweet corn is delicious. A little butter and salt on corn on the cob is one of the best things in the world. When it is really good, you just want to invite the whole world over to share in eating some. It can be a great social event, something simple from a time when the world was simple. Pure joys are shared by all.

If on the other hand, you have really dull, tasteless corn, maybe it isn’t the wisest thing to try and share it with the world. Then people will just get full on ears of less than fully satisfying corn.

American Express not accepted where advertised

Yesterday I went to see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie at the Wynnsong Carmike theater in Provo, Utah. When I went to pay for my ticket, I tried to use my American Express card, but was informed that they don’t accept American Express. So I had to borrow some cash from a friend to buy the ticket, no biggie.

So while sitting through and watching the 25 minutes of pre-feature trailers and commercials, I noticed that there was a commercial for American Express. I just think it is pretty for a place that doesn’t accept American Express cards to be showing an American Express commercial.

One and a half verses from the west

But if I could just walk away
I wouldn’t know which words to say
but if you want I’ll try to stay
so tell me
whats the key

And if I love you, tell me will you
If I’m lonely destined, throw me a clue

Frustration

The last couple of days I’ve felt so frustrated. I feel like I’m looking to open the door to magical treasure. The problem is, there are many doors, and each door has two different locks. I’m going around with my key, trying locks. Sometimes my key fits into one of the locks, but the other lock is firmly locked, and the door stays closed. Sometimes I come across a door with one of the locks already unlocked, but my key doesn’t fit in the remaining locked lock.

You’ve asked me to tell, but I said I didn’t want to. You said that I could trust, it was only you, which, ironically simple, is true.
