LEGO Hamster Lift Might Be More Cruel Than the Wheel

I’ve never decided if the hamster wheel is a cruel or kind invention. On one hand, it keeps the otherwise inert hamster in shape. On the other, that hamster getting nowhere quickly. This LEGO elevator leaves me, again, floating in moral ambiguity. One one hand, it’s LEGO and a convenient elevator. On the other…well, just watch the clip.

Jaiku, the microblog

I’ve been playing around just a little bit with Jaiku. Its a microblog, or a presence indicator, or an online status syndicator, or something like that. My Jaiku is at http://jwb.jaiku.com. I’ve found that they have strangely appropriate icons to use, and that jaiku isn’t always the easiest thing to type.

If any of my dedicated readers or friends want an invite, let me know. You’ll have to personally know me or have left a comment or something, and I’d be happy to help a friend out. If you are just stopping by hoping I’m giving out free invites, you should look somewhere else. (Hint: try Google searching “jaiku invites”)

Columns and Capitals

ColumnsThis last week I launched yet another blog. This brings my blog count up to 6. This may sound like a high number, but I think I finally having so many blogs helps me to focus on particular audiences with each blog. My blogs are:

  • Jacob’s Blog which is my personal weblog and where I’ll likely place random things.
  • Jacob’s Technical Blog is where I’ll put all things nerdy. Many of my other readers won’t want to be bothered by all the technical or nerdy things I may have to say, so I’ve separated all that out to its own blog.
  • Jacob on Religion is where I write anything with a strong religious tone. While I hope my other readers will stop by this blog, I’ve separated it to help with syndication of the content.
  • Columns and Capitals is my newest blog. This is where I’ll write about non-personal things, such as movies I’ve seen, sports, news, politics, and other topics which may be generally interesting but not personal. Any editorials, opinions, or essays are likely to find a home here.
  • LDSsearch.com Blog is a blog I sometimes write in as the maintainer of the LDSsearch.com search engine.
  • Then there is my secret blog, which is of course, secret.

I’m hoping that Columns and Capitals will be a big success. In looking at what I have done with this blog over the last two years, I’ve gotten less and less personal. I’m hoping to reverse this trend by moving all that non-personal stuff to Columns and Capitals. The words column and capital both have references to print media and architecture.

About hiking socks

I’ve been doing some research into socks for hiking and backpacking. I need some new adventure socks. I found a page at REI that describes how to choose socks. The page is helpful and straight forward.

New religion blog

Last week I announced a new blog of a technical nature. This week I’m announcing a new blog of a religion nature. While I anticipate many of the things posted there to be about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I plan on writing a lot about ethics, values, principles, and general faith. Many of my posts will be interesting to those members of my Church, while I hope I will be able to post articles that people of all faiths will be able to relate to. I will write about m beliefs, and also my experiences with God, religion, and my attempts to be a good person.

The title for the blog is Jacob on Religion, and the address for my new site is http://jacob.peargrove.com/religion . Thank you for reading and I welcome your comments.

About Y Mountain

I’ve found that I’ve had a lot of visitors to this blog who have been searching for information about Y Mountain. My friend, Hyrum Wright, has a hiking site where he has two hiking reports for Y Mountain. These are good reads for anyone wishing to hike the mountain.

Y Mountain Elevation: 8,569 ft.

Jacob’s Technical Blog

I’ve started some efforts to focus my blog content on a more specific audience base. The first step in doing this has been to create a new blog for posts of a technical nature. This blog has a simple name, Jacob’s Technical Blog and the URL is similar to this one: http://jacob.peargrove.com/tech . I thought that I might be confusing some of my readers here whenever I posted things nerdy or technical, so I’ll be putting those posts on my new technical blog.

Now that those are gone, hopefully the content I post here will be slightly more consistent at being interesting to you. You may want to consider subscribing to the feed for this site. If you are using Firefox, you can subscribe by clicking the orange RSS icon that is usually in the location bar of your browser.

Vanilla House Designs

Perhaps this is just a shameless plug, but I recently set up Wordpress to be used for my mom’s business website. She really likes it, especially how she can edit and post content herself instead of having to go through a webmaster. I really hacked the template to get it to look like a regular website instead of a blog, like Wordpress sites normally do. The url is: http://www.vanillahousedesigns.com . Maybe one of these days I’ll tell her that she actually has a blog.

I like stars

I like stars, which is why living in Provo isn’t the best situation for me. You see, in Provo and Salt Lake City, so much light is reflected upward into the skies that it makes it really hard to see and admire the stars. Light shining up in the skies is called light pollution, and makes backyard astronomy more difficult. Deseret News has an article about the light pollution problem and what some are doing to help fight the problem.

LDS.org project manager now has his own blog

As explained in the about page of his blog, Larry Richman has started his own blog at ldsWebguy.com. His blog is not an official Church publication, but it does provide some interesting insight about what goes on behind some of the Church Internet strategies. I’ve read some of his posts, and some of them are ok.

Jerusalem Center now houses refugees

In case you are wondering what the status of the BYU Jerusalem Center is during the latest middle-east conflict, I suggest you read this post. Personally, I think the chances of the Jerusalem opening this fall as was planned is pretty slim.

300 posts

I recently broke the 300 post mark on this blog. Either I enjoy typing, or I don’t have a life. I’ve been writing more and more about religious topics here, which I guess makes this one of many mormon blogs. I’ve had some good posts. About 50 posts ago, I wrote about how one can go about finding self. About 100 posts ago I shared a graph which charts how many characters I write in posts in each hour of the day. And about 200 posts ago I shared an analogy about DTRs.

It doesn’t get any nerdier than this

I ran across this web site today. It is the Bible translated into Klingon. Klingon is a made up language used with the Sci-fi TV series, Star Trek.

It gets worse. I’ve been working on a new search engine called LDSsearch.com, and I thought I would type Klingon into the search engine. It looks like portions of the Book of Mormon are also translated into Klingon.

My new job

I recently started my new job at the More Good Foundation. A lot of people have been asking me what the foundation does. Well, recently The Daily Universe published an article about the work the foundation does. You can read the article here: Foundation is using the Internet to fight anti-Mormon literature

AIM Fight

I came across a neat little site today called AIM Fight. Basically, you put in two AIM screennames and it gives you a score for each about how popular they are.

Scores are computed based on how many people have you on their buddy list, and the scores of those people who have you, up to three levels deep.

Currently, I’m at 2575.
